Does abdominal ultrasound treat kidney stones?

Ultrasound creates images of the kidneys and bladder without using radiation. It may show a stone, enlargement of the drainage system, or another reason for pain. Very small stones or stones in some parts of the urinary tract may be difficult to see, so the clinician interprets the scan alongside your symptoms, urine test, blood tests, and sometimes other imaging.

Arrange medical review for suspected kidney-stone pain rather than relying on the scan alone. Treatment depends on the stone's location, size, symptoms, kidney function, and whether urine is blocked. A clinician may recommend fluids suited to your condition, pain relief, monitoring for passage, or a stone-removal procedure. Do not force large amounts of fluid if you are vomiting or have been told to restrict fluids.

Seek urgent assessment for fever or chills with side or back pain, inability to pass urine, uncontrolled pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, or feeling suddenly very unwell. A blocked urinary system with infection can become serious and needs prompt treatment.

Ask whether the scan shows a stone or blockage, how kidney function and urine results affect the plan, and what symptoms require immediate care.
