Does abdominal ultrasound treat fatty liver disease?

Fatty liver disease means excess fat has built up in liver cells. An abdominal ultrasound may show a liver appearance consistent with fat and can also examine nearby organs, but it cannot fully determine the cause or the degree of inflammation and scarring. A clinician may combine the scan with symptoms, medical history, blood tests, and sometimes another form of assessment. The scan is a diagnostic aid, not a medicine or procedure that removes liver fat.

Discuss the report with the clinician who requested it. They can review alcohol intake, medicines, weight, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other factors that affect liver health, then agree on practical changes and follow-up. Do not start supplements marketed for liver cleansing without advice, because some products can injure the liver. Follow any ultrasound preparation instructions, which may include fasting, so the images are as useful as possible.

Seek urgent medical help for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or intense worsening pain. Arrange a clinician appointment for persistent tiredness, recurrent discomfort under the right ribs, or an abnormal liver test. Fatty liver disease can be silent, so the absence of symptoms does not replace planned follow-up.
