Pelvic floor repair surgery aims to support tissues affected by pelvic organ prolapse. Depending on the examination, repair may involve the front wall near the bladder, the back wall near the bowel, or another part of the pelvic support. Symptoms can include pressure, a bulge, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel, and discomfort during activity.

A urogynaecology consultation considers symptom impact, examination findings, general health and your priorities. Surgery is only one option; observation, pelvic floor therapy, a vaginal pessary or other care may also be discussed.

Describe when the bulge or pressure appears and whether urination or bowel movements are affected. Mention previous pelvic operations, childbirth history, medicines and plans for future pregnancy. Ask which compartment is affected, what repair is proposed, whether tissue or another material is used, and what recovery restrictions apply. A written plan can help you prepare for transport, wound care and follow-up.

Contact the surgical team promptly after repair for fever, increasing pain, heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, inability to urinate, or worsening difficulty passing stool. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fainting, chest pain or breathing difficulty. A new painful bulge or inability to empty the bladder before surgery also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask how the prolapse was identified, whether more than one area is involved, which non-surgical options suit you, and how surgery could affect bladder, bowel or sexual function. Clarify expected follow-up and the signs that should trigger an early call.
