Does a trichology perform trichoscopy?

Trichoscopy uses magnification and light to inspect the scalp, hair shafts, follicles and skin surface. It is performed without removing hair. The clinician may look for patterns such as differences in shaft thickness, follicle openings, scaling, redness, broken hairs or areas of reduced density. These details can help separate hair shedding from hair-shaft breakage and can support an assessment of several scalp concerns.

The word trichology describes a focus on hair and scalp health, while trichoscopy describes the viewing method. A provider’s title does not by itself show whether they offer the examination, so availability and training can vary.

When booking, ask whether the visit includes trichoscopy and who will interpret the images. Mention when the change began, whether shedding is diffuse or patchy, and any itching, pain, scaling or recent chemical treatment. Arrive with the scalp free of heavy fibres, sprays or oils if the clinic gives no different instructions. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, because some can affect hair growth or shedding.
