Does a trichology perform FUT hair transplant?

FUT, or follicular unit transplantation, uses a strip of scalp from the donor area. The strip is divided into follicular units, which are then placed into planned recipient sites. Because this involves a surgical wound and closure of the donor area, the qualifications and hands-on role of the clinician matter.

A trichology service can contribute scalp assessment, hair-loss history, treatment planning and follow-up, but its title alone does not tell you who performs surgery. Ask whether a doctor or other licensed clinician will remove the strip, close the donor area, prepare grafts and place them. You should receive a clear explanation of the scar, healing process and possible alternatives.

Arrange an in-person assessment and ask for the diagnosis behind the hair loss. Confirm the operator’s training in FUT, the clinic’s regulatory status, infection-control process, anaesthesia arrangements and plan for follow-up. Discuss donor-area laxity, scar placement, graft preservation and how future hair loss could affect the result.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous scalp surgery and conditions that can affect bleeding or healing. A written plan should identify who is responsible during the operation and who you contact after leaving the clinic.

After FUT, call the clinic about increasing redness, pus, worsening swelling, fever, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain or a donor wound that separates. Seek urgent help for breathing problems, collapse or rapidly spreading swelling. If hair loss is sudden, painful or associated with scalp inflammation, obtain medical assessment before considering surgery.

Ask who will remove and close the donor strip, who will dissect and place grafts, where the scar will sit, how it will be cared for and what changes should prompt an urgent review. Ask how the plan accounts for continuing hair loss.
