Does a surgical oncologist perform lung lobectomy?

The right specialist depends on the hospital's team structure and the surgeon's training. Lobectomy removes one lobe of a lung and may be combined with removal or sampling of nearby lymph nodes.

Before recommending lobectomy, the team reviews the lesion's location and extent, whether lymph nodes or other sites are involved, and how much breathing reserve the person has. Imaging, lung-function testing and assessment of heart health can inform whether surgery is suitable.

The operation may use an open chest incision or a minimally invasive technique such as video-assisted or robotic surgery. The surgeon seals and divides the lobe's airway and blood vessels before removing it. A chest drain is commonly left temporarily to remove air and fluid while the lung settles.

Provide the clinic with your scans, biopsy results, medicine list, smoking history and details of heart or breathing conditions. Report blood thinners, inhalers, sleep apnoea equipment and previous chest procedures.

Ask how the team assessed your breathing reserve and which approach is planned. Complete any advised prehabilitation, breathing exercises or smoking support, and follow specific directions for fasting and medicines. Arrange help with transport, meals and daily tasks for the early recovery period.

Seek emergency care for sudden or severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, coughing up a large amount of blood, blue or grey lips, or new confusion. Contact the surgical unit promptly for fever, worsening breathlessness, increasing wound redness or drainage, uncontrolled pain, persistent vomiting, or a new irregular or racing heartbeat.

Ask why lobectomy is preferred over a smaller resection or another treatment, who will perform it, and whether an open or minimally invasive approach is expected. Clarify lymph-node assessment, chest-drain care, pain control, breathing exercises, pathology timing, activity limits and the follow-up plan.
