Does a surgical oncologist perform keyhole cancer surgery?

Keyhole surgery is also called laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery. The surgeon operates through small abdominal incisions using a camera and long instruments; some operations may use robotic assistance. An open incision may still be safer or more effective in certain situations.

The aim is the same as with open cancer surgery: remove the planned tissue while protecting nearby structures. Suitability depends on the organ involved, the tumour's position and extent, previous operations, imaging findings and the surgeon's assessment.
