Does surgical oncology perform bowel resection?

The surgeon removes the diseased part of the bowel and may remove nearby lymph nodes or tissue when required by the cancer operation. The remaining bowel ends may be joined. In some situations, an opening called a stoma is created so waste can leave the body into a bag.

Give the team a complete list of medicines and supplements, including blood thinners. Follow only the supplied instructions for eating, drinking, bowel preparation and medicine changes. Tell the surgeon about previous abdominal operations, current infections and any difficulty managing food or fluids.

Arrange practical help for the early recovery period. If a stoma might be needed, meeting a stoma nurse before surgery can help with site planning, pouch care and supplies. Confirm how pain relief, movement, eating and wound care will be managed after the operation.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, a wound that becomes red or drains fluid, worsening abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, or pain that is increasing rather than settling. Emergency assessment is needed for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, heavy bleeding, sudden severe abdominal pain or confusion. Follow the team's specific advice about changes in bowel or stoma output.

Ask which bowel segment is expected to be removed, whether the ends are likely to be joined and whether a temporary or long-term stoma is possible. Discuss the planned surgical approach, what tissue will be examined, how recovery will affect eating and bowel habits, and when further oncology decisions will be made.
