An epidural steroid injection places anti-inflammatory medicine near the spinal nerves or the epidural space. It may be considered when pain travels into an arm or leg and examination or imaging suggests nerve irritation. The injection can support symptom relief and sometimes helps clarify which area is contributing to pain, but it does not correct every structural cause. A spine surgeon may provide it, while an interventional pain clinician or radiologist may perform it depending on local services.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, infection, allergies, pregnancy, and any earlier reaction to injections. Bring imaging reports and explain the path of pain, numbness, and weakness. Ask whether image guidance will be used, which level is being targeted, and what improvement would support the next treatment decision. Follow instructions about medicines before the procedure and arrange help if sedation or temporary weakness is expected.

After an injection, seek urgent help for new or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe headache that changes when upright, fever, or severe back pain with illness. Trouble breathing, facial swelling, or widespread hives can signal a serious reaction. Increasing redness or drainage at the injection site also needs prompt medical review.
