Does a radiology perform musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses a handheld probe and sound waves to examine tendons, muscles, ligaments, joints, bursae, and some superficial nerves. The examiner can watch structures move, compare sides, and assess blood flow when Doppler imaging is used. Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation. Its usefulness depends on the body area and the experience of the person performing the scan; deeper structures may need another imaging method.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed. Bring the referral and describe exactly where pain, swelling, clicking, or weakness occurs. Ask whether the examination will include movement or Doppler assessment. You can usually eat, drink, and take regular medicines unless the imaging centre gives different instructions. Confirm who will receive the report.

Seek prompt assessment for an injury followed by severe pain, a new deformity, inability to use the limb, or a cold, pale, or blue hand or foot. Urgent review is also needed for rapidly increasing swelling, fever with a hot swollen joint, or new numbness and weakness.

Which structure needs assessment? Will the scan be dynamic or include Doppler? Is ultrasound enough for this concern? What other test would be considered if the images do not answer the question?
