Does a radiology perform musculoskeletal MRI?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, nerves, and bones. A radiographer positions you and controls the scanner from a nearby room. The radiologist checks the images, considers the clinical question, and prepares a report. MRI does not use ionising radiation, but the magnetic environment means certain metal objects and implanted devices require careful screening.

Tell the MRI team about pacemakers, implanted pumps, metal fragments, clips, hearing devices, pregnancy, kidney disease, or previous contrast reactions. Follow instructions about food, drink, and medicines. You may need to remain still and may hear loud knocking sounds; hearing protection is provided. Ask whether contrast is planned and when the report will be discussed.

Seek urgent care for sudden limb weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, or a severe injury with loss of function. If contrast is given, get immediate help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash.
