Does a radiology perform musculoskeletal CT scan?

A CT scanner uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of bones and selected soft tissues. A radiographer positions you, explains the scan, and operates the equipment. A radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to the clinician who requested the examination. The scan itself is not usually performed by the radiologist, although the radiologist oversees the imaging service and may supervise specialised studies.

Before the appointment, tell the imaging centre if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, have kidney problems, or have reacted to contrast material. Follow any food or drink instructions you receive. Wear clothing that allows access to the body part being examined and remove metal objects when asked. Ask when and how the report will reach your treating clinician.

Contact a clinician promptly for severe pain with loss of movement, a visibly deformed limb, new numbness or weakness, or a cold or discoloured hand or foot. After contrast, urgent help is needed for trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness, or a widespread rapidly developing rash.
