Does radiology perform breast MRI?

During a breast MRI, you lie on a padded table that moves into the MRI scanner. The breast is positioned in a special opening so detailed images can be obtained. Some examinations use contrast through a vein; the radiology team checks for relevant allergies, kidney problems, and other safety concerns beforehand. MRI uses magnetic fields rather than X-rays. The radiologist reviews the images and the clinician who requested the scan explains what the findings mean for you.

Tell the centre if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have metal or electronic implants, kidney disease, or a previous reaction to MRI contrast. Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. Wear clothing without metal where possible and remove jewellery. Bring prior breast imaging or ask the centre whether it can access earlier studies, because comparison can help the radiologist assess changes.

Contact the ordering clinician promptly if a new breast change, nipple discharge, skin change, or persistent focal pain needs assessment; the symptom itself does not establish its cause. After contrast, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Ask for advice about any worsening pain or swelling at the injection site.

Ask why MRI is recommended, whether contrast is planned, how to prepare, when and how results will be shared, and whether your previous mammograms or other breast images should be brought for comparison.
