Does radiation oncology perform proton therapy?

Specially trained radiation therapists deliver the prescribed treatment using a proton beam system. Medical physicists and dosimetrists also help calculate and check the plan.

Protons deposit radiation differently from conventional X-rays, allowing the team to shape where the dose stops. This can help limit radiation beyond the target in selected situations. It does not make proton therapy suitable for every cancer; the expected benefit depends on the tumour's location, nearby sensitive structures, previous treatment, and the available plan comparison.

Gather scan reports, pathology information, treatment summaries, and details of any earlier radiotherapy. During planning, you may have imaging in the position used for treatment and a device made to help you remain still. Tell the team about implanted medical devices, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, anxiety in enclosed spaces, and any pain that makes positioning difficult.

Report new or worsening treatment effects to the radiation team using the contact instructions they provide. Get urgent help for severe trouble breathing, a seizure, sudden confusion, new weakness, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not wait for the next proton therapy visit when a symptom is sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening.

Ask why proton therapy is being considered for your tumour, how its plan compares with a photon radiotherapy plan, which nearby organs the team aims to protect, and what side effects are expected. Clarify where treatment is available, how follow-up will work, and who will coordinate care with your other specialists.
