Does a radiation oncology perform external beam radiotherapy?

The radiation oncologist oversees the prescription and clinical decisions. Radiation therapists operate the treatment equipment, medical physicists check dose calculations and technical safety, and nurses or other clinicians help manage treatment effects.

A machine directs radiation beams at a planned area from outside the body. Before treatment starts, a planning scan records your treatment position and anatomy. The team maps the target and nearby organs, calculates beam arrangements, and creates positioning supports or small skin marks when needed for reproducibility.

During each treatment, the machine may move around you but does not touch you. You need to remain still while staff monitor you from outside the room and can communicate with you. The visit schedule and dose pattern depend on the diagnosis, treatment goal, body area, and selected technique.

Attend the planning appointment in the condition requested by the team; some plans require a comfortably full bladder, an empty bowel, or specific breathing instructions. Report pregnancy or possible pregnancy and mention implanted electronic devices, previous radiotherapy, medicines, and difficulty lying in one position. Do not apply unapproved products to the treatment area because they may irritate the skin or interfere with positioning.

Report worsening pain, skin breakdown, difficulty eating or drinking, repeated vomiting, new weakness, troublesome bowel or bladder changes, or any effect that prevents normal self-care. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, a seizure, collapse, or sudden neurological symptoms. Side effects vary with the treated area and can continue developing after the final visit, so use the follow-up contacts provided by the department.
