Scar revision surgery, also called surgical scar correction, changes the shape or position of selected scar tissue. The surgeon may remove or release part of a scar, rearrange nearby skin or close the area carefully to create a less noticeable line. The choice depends on whether the scar is raised, widened, tethered, painful or restricting movement. Surgery cannot erase a scar, and the revised area still needs time and appropriate care to mature. Non-surgical options may be more suitable for some scars.

Show the surgeon when the scar began, how it changed and whether it itches, hurts, thickens or limits movement. Share previous treatments, operations, allergies, medicines, nicotine use and any tendency to form prominent scars. Ask how the incision will be placed, what wound care is required and whether the scar could widen or become raised again. A staged plan may be considered when the scar or surrounding skin needs preparation.

Seek prompt medical advice for a scar that becomes increasingly painful, red, hot, swollen, drains fluid, opens or changes quickly. A scar that restricts movement, follows a recent injury or is associated with fever should be assessed. After revision, contact the surgical team for bleeding that does not settle, spreading redness, fever, worsening pain or wound separation. Severe breathing difficulty or fainting requires emergency care.
