Does a physical medicine & rehabilitation perform EMG and nerve conduction study?

Nerve conduction testing measures how electrical signals travel along selected nerves. Electromyography records electrical activity in muscles, sometimes using a fine needle. Together, the tests can help assess problems affecting a nerve root, peripheral nerve, muscle, or the connection between nerve and muscle.

The clinician chooses which nerves and muscles to test based on symptoms such as tingling, numbness, weakness, cramps, or changes in movement. Results are interpreted alongside the physical examination and medical history; a test result alone does not explain every source of pain or fatigue.

Wear loose clothing and keep the skin free of creams or lotions on the day of the appointment. Tell the clinician about a pacemaker or other implanted device, bleeding problems, medicines that affect clotting, skin infection, and significant swelling. Most people can resume usual activities unless the clinic gives different advice. Ask when and how the findings will be explained.

Do not wait for a routine test if weakness is sudden or rapidly worsening, one side of the body is affected with speech or facial changes, there is new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe breathing difficulty, or inability to walk. After testing, contact the service for persistent bleeding, spreading redness, fever, or severe pain.

Ask why the study is recommended, which nerves or muscles will be examined, whether both parts are needed, how to manage medicines beforehand, when results will be available, and what further assessment may follow.
