Does a pain management perform spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation uses a small implanted system to send electrical signals near the spinal cord. These signals can change how certain pain messages are processed. Care commonly includes assessment, a discussion of goals and alternatives, a temporary trial for suitable patients, and review of the response before any longer-term implant is considered.

A pain physician may select patients, place trial leads, monitor the trial, and manage pain medicines. Depending on the clinic and device, another specialist may help with implantation, programming, or follow-up. The treatment is not a cure for every cause of pain, and the device requires ongoing review.

Bring a list of treatments already tried, your medicines, previous operations, imaging reports, and details about how pain affects walking, sleep, work, or daily tasks. Seek urgent care for new severe weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, sudden breathing difficulty, fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. After a procedure, promptly report fever, drainage, marked swelling, a severe headache, new neurological symptoms, or sudden changes in stimulation with worsening pain.

Ask what pain mechanism the device is intended to address, whether a trial is suitable, which clinicians will perform each stage, what alternatives exist, how the device is maintained, and which warning signs require immediate review.
