Does otolaryngology perform nasal cautery?

The clinician examines the inside of the nose, often looking for a fragile vessel near the front of the nasal septum. After numbing the area when needed, they apply a cauterising treatment to seal the selected spot. Cautery is considered only when it fits the cause and location of bleeding; it is not appropriate for every nosebleed. Dry air, nose picking, irritation, medicines that affect clotting and other conditions can contribute to recurrent bleeding and may need separate attention.

Tell the clinician about frequent bleeding, nasal surgery, allergies and medicines such as blood thinners. During a nosebleed, sit upright, lean slightly forward and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously. After cautery, follow advice about ointment, saline or avoiding nose blowing and strenuous activity. Do not pick a crust or apply products that were not recommended for the treated area.

Seek urgent assessment if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes weakness or faintness, or continues despite firm pressure. Get prompt help if blood is flowing into the throat, you take anticoagulant medicine, or bleeding episodes are becoming more frequent. A nosebleed with breathing difficulty or severe facial pain also needs immediate attention.
