Does obstetrics perform vaginal birth after caesarean?

Vaginal birth after caesarean means planning a vaginal birth following a previous caesarean. An obstetrician reviews the reason for the earlier operation, the type of uterine incision, other pregnancy details and your preferences. The team considers whether the maternity unit can provide continuous monitoring and respond quickly if the plan changes.

Your plan may include discussing spontaneous labour, induction, pain relief, monitoring and caesarean birth if vaginal birth is not advisable or labour becomes unsafe. A previous caesarean does not by itself settle the plan for every pregnancy.

Bring your previous caesarean records if available and tell the obstetrician about other uterine procedures, medical conditions and your prior recovery. Ask when the decision will be reviewed, where to go when labour starts and how to recognise contractions or waters breaking. Discuss pain relief, support people and the possibility that the birth plan may change.

Contact your maternity unit immediately for vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, regular contractions, sudden severe abdominal pain, faintness or reduced baby movements. During labour, report constant pain between contractions, unusual tenderness, dizziness or feeling unwell. Use emergency services if symptoms are severe or you cannot reach your maternity team.
