Does obstetrics perform a glucose tolerance test?

A glucose tolerance test checks how your body handles a measured glucose drink. Blood is collected at planned points around the drink so the team can assess how your blood glucose changes. The test may be offered during pregnancy when screening or personal factors make it relevant. It is different from checking urine or taking a single random blood sample.

The clinic gives specific instructions about fasting, drinking water, medicines and the appointment length. Some people feel nauseated, light-headed or tired during the test, so tell staff immediately if you feel unwell.

Confirm with the clinic whether you need to fast and whether any medicine should be taken differently. Plan to remain at the testing site for the full appointment, bring water only if permitted, and take a snack for afterwards. Tell staff about diabetes, medicines, vomiting during pregnancy or a previous reaction to glucose drinks. Do not change your diet or treatment plan without clinical advice.

During or after testing, ask for immediate help if you faint, have persistent vomiting, become confused, develop severe weakness or cannot keep fluids down. Contact your maternity team urgently for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid loss or markedly reduced baby movements; those concerns are separate from the test result.

Ask why the test is recommended, how to prepare, what happens if you vomit the drink, when results will be reviewed and what follow-up would be offered if the result is outside the expected range.
