Does an obstetrician perform an assisted vaginal delivery?

An assisted vaginal delivery uses forceps or a vacuum device to help guide the baby's head out during the pushing stage. An obstetrician assesses the baby's position, the progress of labour, the fetal heart pattern, and whether the cervix is fully open before recommending it. Pain relief, bladder emptying, and an examination are discussed as part of preparation. The team explains the reason, the device planned, and what happens if the attempt is not suitable or does not work.

If your team raises assisted delivery, ask why birth needs help now and whether there is time to discuss alternatives. Tell them about allergies, medicines, and any previous birth injury. Follow instructions about pushing and position during the procedure. After birth, ask about any tear or cut, the baby's examination, pain relief, hygiene, and signs that need a review.

During labour, tell the maternity team immediately about severe pain, faintness, heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, or a sudden change in fetal movement if you are not already being monitored. After an assisted birth, seek prompt advice for worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, difficulty passing urine, increasing wound swelling, or concerns about the baby's feeding or alertness.
