Ovarian drilling, also called laparoscopic ovarian diathermy, is performed through small abdominal openings while you are under anaesthesia. The specialist uses energy to make controlled openings in the outer part of an ovary. In selected people with polycystic ovary syndrome and difficulty ovulating, this may change hormone activity and help ovulation. It is not suitable for everyone, and the expected benefit must be balanced with effects on ovarian tissue and future fertility.

Discuss your menstrual pattern, previous fertility treatment, hormone tests, scans, medicines and pregnancy plans. Ask whether medication or another fertility approach should be tried first. Before surgery, confirm fasting, medicines to pause, recovery arrangements and how ovulation will be monitored afterwards.
