Does an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist perform operative hysteroscopy?

Operative hysteroscopy uses a slender camera passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Small instruments can remove a polyp or fibroid, treat scar tissue, take a sample, or address another finding identified in the cavity. It does not require an abdominal incision. The setting, anaesthesia and procedure length depend on the planned treatment and your health history. Your specialist will explain what can be completed during the procedure and what may need a separate plan.

Tell the clinic if you may be pregnant, take blood-thinning medicine, have an infection, or have allergies. Confirm whether you need to fast and arrange transport if sedation or anaesthesia is used. Mild cramping and light bleeding can occur afterwards. Follow the discharge advice about activity, bathing, sex and medicines, and attend follow-up if a tissue sample was taken.

Contact the care team promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, faintness, or difficulty passing urine after the procedure. Severe pain with vomiting or feeling very unwell needs urgent assessment rather than waiting for routine follow-up.

Ask what the hysteroscopy is expected to find or treat, whether a sample will be sent for examination, what anaesthesia is suitable, and when normal activities can resume. Ask how results will be shared and whom to contact if bleeding or pain increases.
