Does obstetrics and gynaecology manage menopause after cancer?

A gynaecologist can address hot flushes, sleep disruption, vaginal dryness, pain with sex, urinary concerns, bleeding changes, and sexual wellbeing. Because some choices depend on the cancer type and previous therapy, the gynaecology and oncology teams may make the plan together.

Cancer treatment can affect ovarian function or bring on menopausal symptoms, sometimes abruptly. The consultation reviews your symptom pattern, menstrual history, cancer diagnosis, operations, radiotherapy, systemic medicines, current medicines, and personal risk factors. Examination or testing is used when it answers a specific clinical question. Management can include practical measures, non-hormonal medicines, vaginal treatments, pelvic health support, and, for selected people, discussion of hormone treatment after careful review.

Write down which symptoms affect you most, when they began, and how they influence sleep, work, intimacy, or daily activity. Bring your cancer treatment summary and a list of prescription medicines, non-prescription products, and supplements. Do not start hormonal or herbal products without checking for interactions or cancer-related concerns. Mention fertility wishes, contraception needs, bone health, heart health, mood changes, and sexual discomfort so the plan addresses your priorities rather than a single symptom.

Arrange medical review for new vaginal bleeding after menopause, bleeding after sex, persistent pelvic pain, a new pelvic or abdominal swelling, or unusual vaginal discharge. These changes have several possible causes and should be assessed rather than attributed automatically to menopause. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding with faintness, sudden severe pelvic pain, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or a painful swollen leg. Contact your oncology team as directed if symptoms arise while you are receiving active cancer treatment.

Ask whether your cancer history changes which hormonal or non-hormonal options can be considered. Clarify how each option may affect sleep, vaginal symptoms, bone health, sexual function, and other medicines. If vaginal or urinary symptoms are prominent, ask whether pelvic health physiotherapy or another specialist would add useful support.
