Does neurology perform EMG and nerve conduction studies?

Nerve conduction testing measures how electrical signals travel along selected nerves. Electromyography, or EMG, records electrical activity in selected muscles, sometimes while the muscle is relaxed and sometimes during contraction. Together, the tests can help a neurologist assess problems such as nerve compression, peripheral nerve injury, or a disorder affecting muscle or the connection between nerve and muscle. The exact combination depends on your symptoms and examination.

Ask the neurology clinic whether you need to stop or change any medicine; do not change prescribed treatment without instructions. Tell the team about blood thinners, a pacemaker or other electrical device, bleeding problems, skin infection, and significant swelling. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being tested, and arrive with a list of symptoms, their timing, and any scans or reports requested by the clinic. Mild brief discomfort can occur during parts of the test.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden weakness on one side, new trouble speaking, severe breathing difficulty, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms need immediate assessment and should not wait for a scheduled EMG. Contact the testing team after the appointment for persistent bleeding, marked swelling, or worsening pain at a test site.

Ask what question the study is intended to answer, which body areas will be tested, and how to prepare. Ask when and how the results will be explained, and what follow-up is planned if the findings point to nerve compression, nerve injury, or a muscle-related problem.
