Does a midwifery perform water birth?

The midwife monitors your wellbeing and the baby’s heartbeat according to local guidance, helps you change position, and maintains communication while you labour in a birth pool. Water temperature, pool access, infection control, and emergency equipment are managed by the maternity service. Eligibility can depend on your medical history, pregnancy progress, gestation, the baby’s position, and the facility’s policy. You may labour in water without giving birth there.

Ask whether your chosen unit offers water birth and what conditions must be met on the day. Discuss what monitoring is possible in the pool, how pain relief affects the plan, and how you would leave the pool if concerns arise. Bring your birth preferences to appointments, but expect the plan to change if monitoring or your condition shows that another option is safer.

Tell the maternity team immediately about heavy bleeding, reduced fetal movement, severe abdominal pain, fever, faintness, or fluid that may be your waters if you are not already being assessed. During labour, report feeling unwell, breathing difficulty, or a sudden change in contractions. The team may ask you to leave the pool for assessment or treatment.
