Does a midwifery perform vaginal delivery?

A midwife may monitor you and your baby, support labour positions and breathing, assess progress, and assist with the birth of the baby and placenta. They can also support feeding and early recovery. The exact role depends on the maternity setting, your health, the baby’s position, and local policies. An obstetrician may become involved when there is a medical concern, an assisted birth is needed, or a caesarean birth is recommended.

Discuss your preferred place of birth and the team available there. Ask how the service handles pain relief, fetal monitoring, assisted birth, transfer to an obstetric team, and newborn support. Share your medical history, previous births, medicines, and birth preferences early. A written plan can guide the team while leaving room to adapt if your or your baby’s needs change.

During pregnancy or labour, contact your maternity unit for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, reduced fetal movement, severe headache with vision changes, or severe abdominal pain. Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse, breathing difficulty, or a feeling that you or your baby is in immediate danger.

Ask who will be present at birth, what happens if labour becomes complicated, how transfer is arranged, and which pain-relief choices are available. You can also ask how the midwife will involve you in decisions throughout labour.
