Does a midwifery perform fetal heart monitoring?

Fetal heart monitoring checks the baby's heart rate and how it changes with movement or contractions. A midwife may listen intermittently with a handheld Doppler or use electronic monitoring, such as cardiotocography or a non-stress test, when continuous information is needed. The method depends on your pregnancy, labour, symptoms, and local maternity practice. A monitor tracing is interpreted with contractions, fetal movement, your pulse, and the wider clinical picture; a single sound or reading does not provide the whole assessment.

Tell the midwife about changes in fetal movement, bleeding, pain, fluid loss, or contractions before monitoring begins. You may be asked to change position so the sensor or Doppler can pick up the heartbeat. During labour, belts may be placed around your abdomen for electronic monitoring. Ask why a method is being recommended, how long it may continue, and what the team will do if the tracing needs review. Keep communicating if the equipment becomes uncomfortable or slips.

Contact your maternity team urgently for markedly reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or fluid leaking from the vagina. Do not wait for a routine monitoring appointment to report these symptoms. The midwife may assess you and escalate to an obstetric team if further evaluation is needed.
