Does a Midwifery Perform Cord Blood Banking?

Cord blood banking involves collecting blood left in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth, then sending it to a specialist bank for testing, processing and storage. A midwife may discuss the option during antenatal care, provide consent paperwork, notify the collection team, or collect the blood if this is part of the agreed birth-service arrangement. The midwifery practice is not necessarily the organisation that owns or stores the unit.

Availability depends on where you plan to give birth and which bank you choose. The hospital or birth centre may have its own procedure for collection, including requirements for the collection kit, timing, labelling and transport. Cord blood collection should not interfere with care for you or your baby. Your birth preferences, including delayed cord clamping, may affect whether enough blood can be collected, so discuss how the plans fit together before labour.

Ask your midwife whether the service offers collection, works with a particular bank, or only provides coordination. Contact the bank early enough to understand eligibility, consent, collection-kit delivery, sample transport, storage arrangements and what happens if collection is not possible. Confirm who is responsible for bringing the kit to the birth setting and who will receive it after collection.

Take the completed paperwork and collection kit with you if the provider requires them. Tell the maternity team when you arrive that you have made a cord blood banking plan. The team may need to prioritise immediate newborn care or management of bleeding; in those circumstances, collection can be changed or omitted.

Cord blood banking itself is not a reason to delay urgent maternity or newborn care. Contact your maternity unit urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, trouble breathing, or a marked reduction in your baby’s movements before birth. After birth, seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or feeling suddenly very unwell. For your baby, obtain urgent medical assessment for difficulty breathing, bluish or grey skin, poor responsiveness, or inability to feed.

Ask: Who will collect the cord blood at my birth? Is the collection available at my planned birth setting? Will it affect delayed cord clamping or other birth preferences? Which organisation processes and stores the sample? What should I bring, and what is the plan if the sample is too small or the birth becomes urgent?
