Does a hand surgeon perform Dupuytren's surgery?

Dupuytren's disease causes thickened tissue in the palm that can form cords and gradually pull a finger toward the palm. Hand surgeons assess which fingers are involved, whether the hand can lie flat, and how movement affects daily tasks. Treatment may involve removing or releasing affected tissue, or another procedure selected for the pattern of contracture. A lump alone does not automatically mean that surgery is needed.

Arrange an appointment with a hand surgeon or orthopedic clinician experienced in hand conditions. Note changes in finger straightening, grip, washing, writing, and placing the hand on a flat surface. Tell the clinician about previous treatment and any medical conditions or medicines that may affect planning. If a procedure is recommended, discuss the expected splint, wound care, therapy, and return to activities.

Get urgent care for a hand injury with an open wound, severe swelling, a deformed finger, or a finger that becomes cold, pale, or numb. After surgery, promptly report increasing pain with spreading redness, fever, pus, or sudden loss of finger movement. Early review helps the team check for complications and protect hand function.

Ask which structure is limiting your finger, whether observation or another treatment is suitable, and what goal surgery would address. Ask how recurrence or further tightening would be monitored, when hand therapy begins, and what movements should be limited while the wound heals.
