Can family medicine provide a telemedicine consultation?

During a video or telephone visit, the doctor can discuss symptoms, review medical history, check how a treatment is going, explain test results, and advise on next steps. You may be asked to describe changes clearly or show a visible area on camera. A remote visit cannot replace every physical examination, sample collection, or urgent assessment.

Before the appointment, write down your main concern, when it began, medicines you take, allergies, and recent readings such as temperature or blood pressure if available. Choose a private, well-lit space and keep relevant reports nearby. The doctor may arrange an examination, testing, a prescription review, or follow-up in person if the video assessment is not enough.

Seek urgent in-person help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, sudden weakness, fainting, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening illness. Do not wait for a scheduled video visit when symptoms suggest an emergency. For less urgent concerns, tell the family medicine team if you cannot safely monitor yourself at home or symptoms continue to worsen.

Ask whether your concern is suitable for remote review, what information or measurements to prepare, how prescriptions will be handled, and what symptoms should prompt an in-person appointment.
