Does a family medicine perform premarital screening?

The doctor discusses personal and family history, answers questions about the screening process, and arranges the tests required by the service or local process. Results may be reviewed with both partners, with attention to inherited conditions, infections, blood disorders, and other findings relevant to future family planning. Screening is not a prediction of every future health problem. A result that needs follow-up may lead to counselling, repeat testing, or referral.

Ask the clinic which identification documents, forms, appointments, and laboratory requirements apply. Share known family conditions and bring previous results if relevant. Both partners should understand how results will be communicated and whether the appointment includes counselling. Avoid delaying questions about an unclear result; understanding the finding helps you decide whether specialist advice is needed before completing the process.

Premarital screening is generally planned rather than urgent. Contact the clinic promptly if a result is described as abnormal, if you are told a confirmatory test is needed, or if you have symptoms of an infection. Seek urgent care for severe illness, breathing difficulty, fainting, or other immediate symptoms instead of waiting for screening results.
