Does a family medicine perform child health consultation?

The clinician may ask about feeding, sleep, behaviour, learning, activity, and toilet habits, depending on the child’s age. They can review growth, examine the child, discuss development, and check whether routine preventive care is up to date. A family medicine clinician can also assess common childhood concerns such as recurring cough, stomach symptoms, skin changes, headaches, or difficulties at school. If the concern needs a paediatric or other specialist opinion, the clinician can explain the next step.

Book the appointment and describe the main concern when you call. Bring the child’s medicines, allergy information, vaccination record, and any letters or test results. Note when symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, and whether they affect eating, sleep, play, or school. A parent or regular caregiver should share changes that may be difficult for a young child to describe.

Seek urgent care if a child has severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, a seizure, unusual unresponsiveness, sudden weakness, serious injury, or signs of severe dehydration. Do not wait for a routine consultation when a baby is difficult to wake, feeding poorly with worsening illness, or has a rapidly deteriorating condition. For less urgent but persistent symptoms, arrange a family medicine review.
