Does a dermatology perform dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy uses a handheld device with magnification and lighting that reduces surface reflection. The dermatologist can assess colour, shape, and internal structures of a lesion more closely than during a standard visual examination. The device rests on or near the skin and does not remove tissue.

The findings help the clinician decide whether a lesion can be monitored, should be photographed for comparison, or needs a biopsy or removal. Dermoscopy supports clinical judgement; it does not by itself provide a laboratory diagnosis.

Avoid covering the area with makeup or concealer on the day of assessment, and point out any lesion that has changed in size, border, colour, sensation, or surface. Mention previous skin cancers and bring earlier photographs if you have them.

Ask whether the dermatologist recommends a baseline image or a follow-up examination. Keep monitoring advice specific: note which lesion to watch, what change matters, and when to return.

Arrange a timely dermatology review for a new or changing pigmented lesion, bleeding or crusting without a clear injury, a sore that does not heal, or a mark that repeatedly itches or hurts. Rapid change, an irregular border, or several distinct colours also warrants examination rather than relying on home photographs alone.
