Short answer

Yes, a cosmetic dermatology clinic may perform laser hair removal after assessing your skin, hair, treatment area, medicines, and suitability for the device.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mechanism
Light heats pigment associated with the hair follicle
Suitability
Hair colour, skin tone, body site, and medicines are considered
Preparation
Follow clinic advice about shaving, waxing, and sun exposure

What laser hair removal does

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light absorbed by pigment in the hair. The resulting heat can affect the follicle and reduce future growth in the treated area. Response varies with hair colour, hair thickness, skin tone, body site, hormones, and the device selected. Hair may shed after treatment, while some growth can return and may need further management.

A consultation helps the clinician choose settings, explain realistic expectations, and identify factors that may increase irritation or pigment change. Areas can include the face, underarms, legs, back, or bikini line, provided the clinician considers the skin and hair in that area.

Before and after the appointment

Tell the clinic about tanning, self-tan, medicines, hormonal conditions, cold sores, scars, and recent waxing or electrolysis. Shaving is often preferred before treatment because it leaves the hair root in place while reducing surface hair; follow the clinic's specific instructions. Avoid plucking or waxing when told, and protect the area from sun.

After treatment, use the recommended cleanser and moisturiser, avoid picking at treated hairs, and follow advice about heat, friction, deodorant, swimming, and exercise. Ask whether a small test area is appropriate for your skin and how settings will be adjusted.

When to seek help

Some warmth and redness around follicles may be expected briefly. Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, blistering, crusting, or dark or light patches are pronounced, worsening, or persistent. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, or severe pain. A clinician should review an area that appears infected or is not healing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is my hair and skin combination suitable for this device? Should I shave or stop waxing beforehand? How will you reduce the chance of pigment change? What will normal recovery look like, and when should I report a reaction?
