Does a breast surgeon perform a breast biopsy?

A biopsy removes cells or tissue so a pathologist can examine them. Breast surgeons commonly perform surgical or excision biopsies and may also assess whether a needle biopsy is appropriate. Core needle biopsy and fine needle aspiration are often guided by ultrasound, mammography or another imaging method and may be performed by a radiology team.

The choice depends on the size and position of the finding, how clearly it can be seen, earlier imaging and whether tissue or fluid is needed. A biopsy does not by itself mean that cancer is present; it is a way to identify the nature of an abnormal area. The result is reviewed with your clinical and imaging findings.

Take your imaging reports and list of medicines to the appointment. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy, implants and any previous breast procedures. Ask which biopsy is planned, how the area will be located and whether a marker may be placed.

Follow instructions about medicines and eating before the procedure. Arrange practical support if you expect soreness or sedation. Afterward, keep the dressing clean and follow the written instructions; do not change prescribed medicines without checking with the treating team.

Contact the clinic for bleeding that continues despite firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, fever, discharge or pain that is getting worse. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathing difficulty or a rapidly expanding breast swelling.
