Do you need vaginal delivery after induction of labour?

Induction uses a cervical-ripening method, medicine or a procedure to encourage labour when starting labour is advised. The aim may be a vaginal birth, but the cervix may not respond, contractions may not become established, or labour may stop progressing. Your team monitors you and the baby while deciding what to do next.

A caesarean may be discussed when there are concerns about the baby’s heart-rate pattern, the placenta or bleeding, your health, or the progress of labour. Having a caesarean after induction is not a failure; it is a change in the plan based on safety and clinical findings.

Before induction, ask why it is recommended, which method will be offered first, how progress will be assessed, and what alternatives exist. Discuss pain-relief choices, monitoring, eating and drinking guidance, and what happens if induction does not work. Write down your preferences while understanding that urgent findings can require a different route of birth.

Follow the timing and contact instructions from your maternity unit. Seek urgent advice for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, severe headache or visual changes, reduced fetal movement, waters breaking with concerning fluid, or feeling suddenly very unwell. During induction, tell staff promptly about strong pain between contractions, breathlessness or a new concern.

Ask what would make the team pause induction, recommend assisted birth or recommend caesarean. Clarify how your preferences will be recorded, who makes decisions during an emergency, and what recovery support is available for each route.
