Do you need targeted therapy after genomic tumour profiling?

The report may identify a tumour change linked to a medicine, show no currently useful target, or produce a finding whose significance is uncertain. Even when a potential target appears, the oncology team checks whether the medicine is appropriate for the tumour type, disease setting, previous treatments, and your health.

Genomic profiling examines changes in tumour material; it is different from a test designed mainly to identify inherited risk. The quality and amount of the sample can affect what the laboratory detects. Some findings are established treatment targets in a particular cancer, while others are relevant only in another disease or remain uncertain.

A matching drug is not automatically the preferred next treatment. The team weighs the strength of the match against standard options, treatment goals, possible side effects, organ function, interactions with other medicines, and whether the cancer has already been exposed to related therapy.

Request a plain-language walkthrough of the report that separates actionable findings from uncertain or non-actionable changes. Ask whether the result changes treatment now, may matter later, or has no present effect. The clinician should also explain whether confirmation with another test or a newer tissue or blood sample is needed.

Before starting targeted therapy, share your full medicine list and any history of heart, liver, kidney, skin, or eye problems. Discuss how response will be checked, which side effects can be managed at home, and which should trigger a same-day call. If the report hints at an inherited change, ask whether genetic counselling and a separate germline test are appropriate.

While waiting for a treatment decision, report new or rapidly worsening cancer-related symptoms rather than waiting for the next routine visit. If targeted therapy has started, use the team's urgent contact route for trouble breathing, facial swelling, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe vomiting or diarrhoea, a spreading or blistering rash, or fever. Bring the medicine name when seeking emergency care.

Ask which finding is driving the recommendation, how closely the proposed medicine matches your cancer, and why it is preferred at this point. Clarify the treatment goal, likely side effects, monitoring plan, other available therapies, and whether the finding could have implications for relatives.
