Do you need ovarian stimulation after amh test?

AMH is a blood test that helps estimate the number of small follicles in the ovaries. It can help a fertility team plan treatment, especially when assisted conception is being considered, but it does not by itself measure egg quality, confirm natural fertility, or decide whether treatment is needed.

Ovarian stimulation uses medicines to encourage several follicles to grow in a treatment cycle. Whether it is appropriate depends on your reason for seeking care, menstrual history, ultrasound findings, other test results, partner factors where relevant, and your goals. A lower or higher AMH result does not automatically mean stimulation should start.

Ask your clinician what the result means for your specific plan and whether an ultrasound or additional assessment is needed. Clarify whether the goal is ovulation induction, egg collection, or another fertility treatment. If stimulation is suggested, discuss medicine timing, monitoring visits, possible side effects, and symptoms that should prompt a call.

If you start stimulation, contact your fertility team for increasing abdominal swelling, significant pain, vomiting, breathlessness, or reduced urination. Seek urgent medical help for severe pain, fainting, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. If you are not taking stimulation medicines, new severe pelvic pain or heavy bleeding still needs prompt assessment.
