Do you need microdiscectomy after musculoskeletal MRI?

MRI can show discs, the spinal canal, nerve roots, inflammation, and other soft tissues. Some findings are present without causing symptoms, so the report needs clinical context. Microdiscectomy is aimed at a specific nerve compression that matches the pattern of pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. The scan may therefore support surgery, support non-surgical care, or show a different explanation. The wording in the report is not a treatment instruction by itself.

Take the MRI report and images to the clinician examining you. Describe where symptoms travel, what makes them worse, and whether strength or sensation has changed. Ask whether the level and side described on the scan correspond with your findings. Depending on the assessment, the next step may be observation, guided exercise, medication, an injection, or a surgical opinion. Keep moving within comfortable limits unless you were given different instructions.

Seek urgent care for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly progressing weakness, or severe symptoms after an injury. A prompt assessment is also needed when pain is accompanied by fever or you feel acutely unwell.
