Do you need microdiscectomy after epidural steroid injection?

An epidural steroid injection places medicine near irritated spinal nerves to reduce inflammation and ease pain. It may help clarify whether a compressed nerve is contributing to your symptoms, but relief can be temporary and does not remove a disc bulge. Microdiscectomy removes the small portion of disc or nearby tissue pressing on a nerve. A scan alone does not decide whether it is needed: the side, strength, sensation, reflexes, pain pattern, and day-to-day limitation must fit together.

Arrange follow-up with the clinician who assessed your back and leg symptoms. Record how much relief the injection gave, when it started, and whether numbness or weakness changed. Continue only the activity and exercises that have been advised, avoiding movements that sharply increase leg pain. A spine specialist may compare your examination with imaging before discussing observation, further non-surgical care, or microdiscectomy. Ask what outcome surgery is intended to improve and what recovery would involve.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new or worsening leg weakness, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, difficulty starting or controlling urination, or loss of bowel control. Prompt review is also appropriate if severe pain rapidly worsens, fever develops after the injection, or the injection site becomes increasingly red, swollen, or painful.
