Do you need knee arthroscopy after musculoskeletal MRI?

Short answer

You do not automatically need knee arthroscopy after a musculoskeletal MRI; the decision combines the scan with symptoms, examination and treatment goals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How MRI fits the decision

A musculoskeletal MRI can show cartilage, menisci, ligaments, tendons, bone marrow and fluid around the knee. A visible change may not explain your pain or limit your function, so the report must be matched with the examination and your history. Arthroscopy uses small instruments inside the joint to inspect or treat selected problems. It may be discussed when a particular structural issue fits your symptoms and non-surgical care has not met the agreed goal. A scan alone does not establish that an operation will help.

What to do after the scan

Review the images and report with the clinician who knows your knee symptoms. Ask which finding is clinically relevant, what treatment options exist, and what improvement each option aims to provide. Discuss physiotherapy, activity changes, medication or injections when appropriate, along with the expected recovery and rehabilitation if arthroscopy is considered. Share whether the knee locks, gives way, swells after activity or prevents work and sport. A second opinion can help when the recommended procedure is unclear.

When to seek prompt assessment

Seek prompt care for a hot, very swollen knee with fever, a new inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed joint, sudden loss of movement after injury, or a cold or numb foot. These symptoms may need urgent assessment rather than routine MRI review. Arrange follow-up for worsening pain, repeated giving way or locking that prevents normal activity.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the MRI shows, which finding matches your examination, whether the knee problem can improve without arthroscopy, and what happens if you wait. Clarify the purpose, risks, recovery and rehabilitation plan for any proposed procedure.

Questions people ask

Can an MRI finding be present without causing my pain?

Yes. The clinician must match the scan with your symptoms, examination and functional limitations before recommending treatment.

What symptoms should I mention before discussing arthroscopy?

Describe locking, giving way, swelling, weight-bearing difficulty, activity limits and how long symptoms have been present.
