Do you need induction of labour after a membrane sweep?

During a membrane sweep, a clinician separates the lower part of the membranes from the cervix with a finger. This can release local hormones and may encourage the cervix to soften and labour to begin, but it does not guarantee that contractions will start. Cramping, irregular contractions and light bleeding can happen afterwards.

If labour does not start, your midwife or obstetrician will consider your gestation, cervical findings, wellbeing checks and any reason delivery is being recommended. They may offer another sweep, wait with monitoring or discuss induction. The choice should reflect your medical situation and preferences.

Rest, note the timing and pattern of contractions, and use the comfort measures your maternity team has recommended. Keep your planned appointment even if you have mild cramps. Ask when to call, where to go if labour begins and what the plan is if the sweep does not lead to labour.

Call your maternity unit for heavy bleeding, reduced fetal movement, regular painful contractions, or fluid that may be your waters. Seek urgent help for severe constant abdominal pain, feeling very unwell, or a concern that something is wrong.
