Do you need a hair transplant after trichoscopy?

Trichoscopy uses magnification to assess hair shafts, follicle openings and scalp features. It can help a clinician distinguish patterns such as diffuse thinning, patterned loss, breakage or signs of scalp inflammation. The examination may point toward medical treatment, observation, a scalp evaluation or further testing rather than surgery.

A transplant moves hair from a donor area to selected thinning areas. It is considered only after the cause of loss is understood and the pattern is sufficiently stable for planning. Ongoing shedding, active inflammation, limited donor density or unrealistic expectations may make another approach more suitable.

Ask what diagnosis the findings support and whether the loss is active. Review non-surgical options, the expected course of untreated loss and the condition of the donor area before discussing graft design. If surgery is considered, request a clear explanation of the hairline plan, recovery, possible need for future treatment and how existing hair will be protected.
