Do you need genomic tumour profiling after a biopsy?

The decision depends on the cancer type, stage, available treatments, earlier test results, and the amount and quality of stored tissue. Profiling is usually ordered only when its findings could influence a real clinical choice.

A biopsy first allows a pathologist to identify cells and tissue features. Genomic tumour profiling then looks for selected alterations within the tumour. These are tumour findings and are not automatically the same as inherited genetic changes.

A result may identify a feature linked to a targeted medicine, help assess eligibility for a particular treatment, or show no actionable alteration. The test cannot promise that a matched medicine will work, and some reported findings have uncertain clinical significance.

Ask whether existing biopsy tissue can be used and whether enough suitable material remains. Your oncology team can explain which panel fits the tumour type, how the result may alter the current plan, and whether treatment should begin before the report is available.

If the sample is inadequate, the options may include a blood-based tumour test, another tissue sample, or proceeding without profiling. Each option has limits, so the choice should reflect the information needed and the safety of obtaining more tissue.

Follow the biopsy team's wound and activity instructions. Contact the clinic promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or bleeding that does not stop with the advised pressure.

Urgent symptoms depend on the sampled site. Seek immediate help for severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or heavy bleeding. These concerns relate to the biopsy and should not wait for genomic results.

Find out what decision the test could change, which tissue will be analysed, and what happens if no useful alteration is found. Ask whether tumour findings could suggest an inherited change that needs separate counselling and testing, and when you will review the report together.
