Do you need a cortisone injection after a musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound can examine tendons, bursae, muscles, joints and fluid while the area is still or moving. It may help explain pain or guide a clinician toward a specific structure, but an image must be matched with your examination and history. Cortisone is a steroid medicine used in selected inflammatory or painful conditions. It may be considered when simpler care has not helped or when targeted treatment is appropriate, but it is not useful for every finding. The clinician also considers the body site, skin and joint health, diabetes, infection risk, medicines and previous injections.

Ask what the ultrasound actually showed and whether it explains your symptoms. Discuss exercise-based rehabilitation, activity changes, pain relief and other options before choosing an injection. Tell the clinician about diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, allergies, immune problems, recent infection and prior steroid injections. If an injection is proposed, ask where it will be placed, what benefit is expected, when to seek help, and how to protect the area afterward. Do not arrange an injection solely because the scan mentions inflammation or fluid.

Seek prompt assessment for a hot, red, rapidly swollen joint, fever, or sudden inability to use the limb, because infection or another urgent problem may need attention. After an injection, contact your clinician for increasing redness, swelling, drainage, fever, severe pain, or a new rash. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or sudden marked weakness.

Ask what diagnosis the scan supports, whether an injection addresses that diagnosis, what alternatives are available, and which changes after treatment would require prompt review.
