Do you need a core needle biopsy after breast ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to show whether a breast finding is fluid-filled or solid and to describe its shape and position. A radiologist may recommend monitoring, another imaging test or a core needle biopsy based on the appearance and your examination history.

A core needle biopsy uses a hollow needle to remove small tissue samples, often with ultrasound guidance. The laboratory result helps identify the nature of the finding and guides the next discussion.

Ask what the ultrasound report recommends and arrange the stated follow-up. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, blood-thinning medicines and any bleeding tendency. Wear a comfortable bra and ask how to manage the dressing and soreness if biopsy is planned.

Seek prompt medical review for a new breast lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody nipple discharge or swelling in the armpit. After biopsy, contact the clinic for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, fever or bleeding that does not settle with pressure.

Ask what feature prompted the recommendation, whether monitoring is suitable, how the sample will be guided, when results are expected and what happens after each possible result.
