Do you need breast lump excision after breast biopsy?

A biopsy removes a sample for laboratory examination; it may not remove the whole lump. If the result is benign and matches the imaging and examination, monitoring can be appropriate. Removal may be discussed when the lump causes discomfort, grows, remains unclear after sampling, or has a result that needs the entire area examined.

Some findings require treatment planning rather than simple excision. Your clinician should explain whether the biopsy was a needle sample or already removed the area, and how confidently the result explains what was seen.

Ask for a copy or clear explanation of the pathology report and whether it agrees with the imaging. Discuss the expected benefit of removal, possible scar or changes in breast shape, anaesthesia, recovery, and alternatives. If surgery is recommended, ask what tissue will be sent for further examination.

Contact your breast team promptly for a lump that enlarges, new skin tethering, nipple changes, or persistent discharge. Following biopsy or excision, seek urgent advice for uncontrolled bleeding, fever, spreading redness, marked swelling, wound separation, or pain that is getting worse.

Ask: What did the pathology show? Does it match the scan? Do I need removal or surveillance? What is the purpose of surgery in my case? How might it affect the breast, and when will the final result be available?
