Do you need breast biopsy after breast ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to show whether an area is fluid-filled, solid, or has features that need closer assessment. A clearly benign-appearing cyst may need reassurance or follow-up, while an indeterminate or suspicious area may lead to tissue sampling. An ultrasound result alone does not diagnose cancer.

The radiologist may recommend a biopsy, another scan, or interval monitoring. The recommendation can also reflect a lump you can feel, a change in the breast, or a mismatch between the examination and the images.

Read the report with the clinician who arranged the scan and ask what category or finding was described. If biopsy is advised, ask which type, how the area will be located, how results will be shared, and what preparation is needed. Bring previous breast imaging when available so changes can be compared.

Arrange prompt clinical review for a new or growing lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a persistent one-sided change, even if an earlier scan was reassuring. After a biopsy, seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding, increasing redness or swelling, fever, or worsening pain.

Ask: What exactly did the ultrasound show? Is the recommendation biopsy, monitoring, or another test? How does the examination fit with the images? When will I receive the result, and what symptoms should make me contact you sooner?
